Police investigating a blaze at a block of flats in West Belfast are no longer treating it as arson.

The fire was reported at Woodbourne Court around 10pm last night.

Firefighters said they had to help a man from the building with ladders after the fire took hold.

A 32-year-old man was arrested but has since been released unconditionally.

Inspector Anne McCourt said this morning: "At around 10pm, we received a report of a fire at a block of flats in the Woodbourne Court area.

"Officers attended the scene, along with the NIFRS who extinguished the small fire in one of the flats.

"A 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson, he is currently in custody."

A PSNI spokesperson added this afternoon: "Following further investigation, police are no longer treating the fire in a block of flats in the Woodbourne Court area of West Belfast on Tuesday night (April 7) as arson.

"The 32-year-old man who had been arrested has now been released unconditionally."

Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service said they were called to the scene at 9.59pm.

Two appliances from Springfield Fire Station and two appliances from Cadogan Fire Station were scrambled.

A spokesperson said: "Firefighters were called to fire in a flat in Woodbourne Court.

"One male was rescued from the next door flat using a short extension ladder and firefighters carried out searches to ensure all other people were accounted for.

"Firefighters wore breathing apparatuses and used two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire.

"The incident was dealt with by 10.59pm and the cause of the fire was deliberate ignition."
