A mum has said her two-year-old son is “lucky to be alive” after their home burst into flames when it was struck by lightning.

Claire Brooks, 30, removed her son from his bedroom at the property in Haxby, North Yorkshire, just hours before it caught fire on Friday evening.

The two of them and the boy’s father Liam were safely sheltered when the house burned down after being struck at approximately 8.15pm.

Pictures and footage showed the destroyed home, which has been left with a 10ft hole in the roof.

It took 25 firefighters to bring the blaze under control.

Police confirmed there were no injuries and everyone had been evacuated.

North Yorkshire Police tweeted: "No injuries are reported and the property has been evacuated.

“Local residents are advised to stay clear of the area to allow emergency services to deal."

A spokesperson for the North Yorkshire Fire Service added: "Five crews from Huntington, York and Acomb have dealt with a fire to a domestic property following a lightning strike.

"The end terraced property suffered extensive fire, heat and smoke damage to the whole building. Crews used 10 breathing apparatus, 4 hosereel jets, various ladders, lighting, hand tools and thermal imaging cameras."

On Friday, temperatures hit 37.8C in the UK which is the highest of the year.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms in some areas.
