What is the G7?
The G7 stands for the Group of Seven.
It is an intergovernmental organisation, whose members are all countries with “advanced economies and open societies”.
Leaders of the member countries meet regularly to discuss their shared values and goals, with the main event known as the G7 Summit, which usually takes place once a year.

This year the UK has the Presidency of the G7, which the member countries take turns to hold.
Leaders from additional countries will also be attending the G7 Summit as guest countries invited by the UK.
These are India, Australia, South Korea and South Africa.
Representatives from the EU will also be at the Summit.
When is the G7 Summit?
The G7 Summit will take place this year on 11-13 June.
It will be held at Carbis Bay in Cornwall in the UK.
It will also be the first in-person G7 Leaders’ Summit in almost two years, after last year’s was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
What can we expect from the Summit?
The goal of this year’s G7 Summit, as set out by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, is to “help the world fight, and then build back better from coronavirus and create a greener, more prosperous future,”

Challenges including coronavirus and climate change are expected to be key themes at this year’s event.
The UK Presidency of the G7 has:
- leading the global recovery from coronavirus while strengthening our resilience against future pandemics
- promoting our future prosperity by championing free and fair trade
- tackling climate change and preserving the planet’s biodiversity
- championing our shared values
The event in Cornwall also aims to be the first carbon neutral G7 summit.
Ahead of the leaders’ summit in June, there is also a Foreign and Development Ministers’ Meeting taking place in London on 3-5 May – the first in-person meeting of G7 foreign and development ministers in over 2 years.
Key topics being discussed include equitable vaccine access, global girls’ education targets, and climate finance goals.
