The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Data for the most recent four days (September 20-23) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

Investors shrug off BoE Governor's suggestion of early rate hike

Investors shrug off BoE Governor's suggestion of early rate hike Bailey raised the prospect of an early interest rate hike in a speech last night, saying the monetary policy committee is ready to do what is necessary to tackle rising inflation. He said the MPC is ‘of the view that the stimulus to monetary policy enacted in response to Covid would need to start to unwind at some point [and] that unwind should be enacted by an increase in bank rate’.Such an increase would not need to wait until the end of the current asset purchase (or quantitative easing) programme in December. There are two opportunities remaining this year for the MPC to move on rates, on 4 November and 16 December.

Number of Britons falling ill with Covid rises almost 30% in a week

Number of Britons falling ill with Covid rises almost 30% in a week King's College London scientists estimated 58,126 people were being infected with the virus every day in the week to September 25, up 28.9 per cent from the previous seven day spell. Cases have soared in children ever since millions of youngsters returned to classrooms following the summer holidays. But now infections appear to be spilling over into their parents, a trend MailOnline revealed earlier this week. Professor Tim Spector, who leads the study, said cases were now being passed up the 'generational ladder'.
