Rahul Gandhi has already appeared twice before the Bhiwandi court this year - the first one was on January 30, Mahatma Gandhi 's death anniversary. While his fight against RSS may have got blunted, his aggressive outbursts and claims may threaten to erode his credibility .

Rahul Gandhi , the newly-anointed president of the Congress party Modi knew the importance of Gujarat in the run-up to the 2019 elections and went all out to win it forgetting the decency and decorum of the office he held. But Gandhi would frustrate them with his confused conduct.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi today pleaded not guilty in a defamation suit filed against him in a Bhiwandi court by a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) worker. This comes a day after his claim that Coca-Cola was founded by a "shikanji seller".

Rahul Gandhi's analogies on Coca-Cola, McDonald's, Ford Motors, Mercedes-Benz and Honda at the Congress' OBC meet yesterday and appearing in a Bhiwandi court could not have come at a worse time for the Opposition.

At a time when the opposition parties are moving ahead to unite against the ruling BJP-led NDA ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Nehru-Gandhi scion's analogies may not inspire confidence in his party men and other prospective alliance partners.

Kejriwal, who served as another media idol for the anti-Modi agenda has lost all credibility . The second is making the election into a Rahul Gandhi versus a Narendra Modi affair. The problem is that Rahul has little stature of his own, much less compared to Modi.

Rahul Gandhi , himself, in one of his tweets after Prime Minister Modi’s speech at the World Economic Forum, appeared to claim that the top 1% owned 73% of the wealth in India, which turned out to be a self - goal .

The Congress was upbeat over pipping the BJP and forming the government in Karnataka. The BJP also lost a number of seats in the recently-held Lok Sabha and Assembly bypolls.

Occasionally, Rahul Gandhi has shown sparks of being an emerging leader. But it does not take much time before that perception is nullified. And he himself is to blame for his image which has been waxing and waning at regular intervals.

He has been accused of shooting and scooting which has not helped the Congress president's credibility.

Rahul Gandhi had shown aggression and signs of maturity after returning from his 56-day sabbatical in April 2015. He came up with the 'suit-boot ki sarkar' and several such jibes to attack Prime Minister and the BJP.

He played a pivotal role in pushing the BJP on the defensive in last year's Gujarat Assembly election. His temple visits and finding faults with the BJP governments at the Centre and the western state paid dividends. The BJP was restricted to 99 seats in the house of 182 members in Gujarat.

Though the other opposition parties have yet to endorse his candidature for the top job, the Congress seems determined to go ahead with projecting him as the prime ministerial candidate.

However, two recent developments have weakened Rahul Gandhi's fight against the BJP.

First, former president Pranab Mukherjee's visit to the RSS headquarters in Nagpur seems to have weakened Rahul's fight against the organisation.

Mukherjee, who was one of the senior-most Congress leaders before getting nominated by the party to the president's post, has been accused of according legitimacy to the RSS.

On the other hand, Rahul Gandhi is fighting against the RSS in and out of the court.

While addressing a public rally near Bhiwandi in Thane district of Maharashtra on March 6, 2014, Rahul had alleged that "the RSS people had killed (Mahatma) Gandhi". Rajesh Kunte, a local RSS worker, filed a defamation case against Rahul Gandhi claiming that the latter's statement slandered the reputation of the RSS.

Rahul Gandhi has already appeared twice before the Bhiwandi court this year - the first one was on January 30, Mahatma Gandhi's death anniversary.

While his fight against RSS may have got blunted, his aggressive outbursts and claims may threaten to erode his credibility.

On June 6, Rahul Gandhi visited Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh to mark the first anniversary of the death of five farmers in firing. In his speech on the occasion, the Congress president attacked the BJP governments in MP and the Centre on issues such as food chain, manufacture of mobile phones, absconding businessmen and employment.

However, the same evening, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley sought to bust Rahul's charges, saying, "How much does he know? When will he know?... Is he being inadequately briefed, or is he being a little too liberal with his facts?"

After the two disasters, Rahul Gandhi's questionable claims about entrepreneurial opportunities in India may have dented his image. This may prove to be dampeners for the Congress and the opposition parties which seek to give the BJP a united fight in 2019.
