Verma's resignation capped a dramatic morning that saw Alok Verma refused to take charges of the director general of fire services and home guards. Alok Verma was shunted out to that post after being removed as the chief of the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Alok Verma was removed as the CBI chief on Thursday (January 10) evening by a select committee comprising Supreme Court Justice AK Sikri, PM Narendra Modi and Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge.

This became the second time Alok Verma was removed from the CBI top post. On October 23, 2018 the government sent Alok Verma on forced leave after his feud with CBI's No. 2 officer Rakesh Asthana became public.

The feud, seen as a power and ego battle, centred around allegations of corruption. The Alok Verma-led CBI filed a case of corruption against Rakesh Asthana while Asthana complained to the government that his boss was corrupt.

The government sent the warring officers on forced leave, prompting Alok Verma to approach the Supreme Court. This week, the court ruled that the government had no powers to act against a director of the Central Bureau of Investigation and reinstated Alok Verma to his post.
