India Turkish court refuses to release Hozan Cane
Because of infidelity: Court opens main proceedings against four VW managers

The main proceedings on suspicion of unfaithfulness, or unfaithfulness in particularly serious cases, had been opened, the court announced on Tuesday.

Canes attorney Newroz Akalan criticized that the continuation of the pre-trial detention equals a prison sentence. The human rights policy spokesman for the SPD parliamentary group, Frank Schwabe, who observed the process, was disappointed. "That's not what we hoped for, Hozan Cane is wrongly in jail," he said. Representatives of the German Consulate General in Istanbul also observed the process. The case strains German-Turkish relations. The federal government has long been trying to find a diplomatic solution.

Cane was arrested in Edirne shortly before the presidential and parliamentary elections in June 2018. In November of the same year, she was sentenced to six years and three months in prison for membership in a terrorist organization. The highest court of appeal had not confirmed the judgment and ordered a new hearing because there was no clear evidence of PKK membership. The prosecution relied on content from Facebook and Twitter profiles, among other things. The case has now been reopened.
Cane, who was switched on by video from the prison in Istanbul on Thursday, said tearfully that the profiles did not belong to her. "I just sing songs and make a living doing it," she said. She never had any connections with an illegal organization.

However, she is not allowed to leave the country and must appear before the court in Istanbul on October 1st. The singer with the stage name Cane has Kurdish roots and only has German citizenship. Her trial in Edirne will continue on September 3rd.
