Little Ava Barry and her mum Vera Twomey are back at home home in Cork after spending five months in Amsterdam.

Vera and her little girl, who is just eight-years-old, left Ireland in order to avail of a medicinal cannabis treatment in Holland, to help treat Ava’s debilitating type of epilepsy called Dravet Syndrome.

Vera had been posting updates on her Facebook today in the lead up to their journey back home.

Earlier today Vera wrote from Cork Airport: ‘Oh Thank God We are landed just now. We are home. Hi Everyone so excited to be home at last.’

The streets of Cork came alive with the sounds of make it medicine make it happen. A crowd of 1000 + marched for 7 year old Ava Barry who has a rare form of epilepsy called Dravits Syndrome and who is been denied access to medicinal cannabis which can keep her seizures down to a minimum.

One post included pictures of the family’s packed bags before they headed to the airport and another included a video of Ava waiting to board their flight back to Ireland.

Unfortunately, the family weren’t home as soon as they wanted, as Vera said to those following: ‘Flight delayed home because of terrible fog till arriving in cork after 12 noon.’

In an emotional post on Facebook earlier in the morning, Vera exclaimed: ‘We are leaving.’

In the post she thanked all of the people and neighbours who helped her and Ava while they were staying in the Netherlands.

The family are able to return to Ireland after Vera battled for months to have the Irish Government and the HSE agree to allow her to treat her daughter with medicinal cannabis.

Her protests included a walk from Cork to Leinster House in Dublin, but she was still denied access to the medication she wanted.

This week, Health Minister Simon Harris announced in the Dail that he has granted Ava a licence to import the medication needed to treat her epilepsy properly.

Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin was just one of the well-wishers who greeted Ava and her mum when they arrived back in Cork today.
