Startling figures from Census 2016 show the scale of the daily exodus from two out of every three local authority areas due to a lack of local job and educational opportunities.

Data published for the first time by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) shows 20 of 31 council areas have fewer people present in the daytime compared with the evening.

More than 44,000 people leave Cork county every day, and almost one-in-six in Meath - in all, the population across the 20 local authority areas drops by more than 260,000 people during the working day.

The details are contained in the CSO's 'Employment, Occupations and Industry' report, which for the first time publishes information on daytime populations.

The last in a series of Census 2016 reports, it also shows just over two million people were at work in April 2016, up 11pc over the five-year period.

The number of people working in IT has risen by more than 55pc over the period, to just over 21,000. The number looking after the home or family continues to decline, falling by just over 10pc to 305,556.

Census 2016 provides details of the numbers at work classified by 328 separate categories. The most common profession is 'sales and retail assistants, cashiers and checkout operators', which includes 90,746 people. It is followed by farmers, who account for almost 70,000 workers, or 3.5pc of the workforce, followed by 'other administrative occupations' with 59,392 workers, and 'nurses and midwives' with 53,910.

The 2,304,037 people in the labour force in April 2016 represented an increase of 71,834 (3.2pc) on April 2011.

The unemployment rate as measured by the census was 12.9pc, down from 19pc in April 2011.

The youth unemployment rate, or number without work aged between 15 and 24, fell by 34,125. In April 2016, the percentage of unemployed in this category was 25.6pc, down from 38.7pc five years previously.

The report also highlights that childless women are far more likely to work than those who have given birth. Some 92.1pc of women aged 30-34 who have not given birth were in employment, compared with 75.6pc of mothers.

The gaps persist for women into their 50s, but narrows for slightly older age groups. It also shows the female unemployment rate stood at 12pc, lower than the rate among males, which stands at 13.7pc.

The figures show the sharpest rise in numbers employed in industrial sectors was in IT, up to 59,376, a rise or 21,262 (55.8pc). It is followed by 'residential care and social work activities', up 23.9pc to 102,653.

There was also an increase in the numbers employed in 'restaurant and mobile food service activities' by 10,052. Conversely, there was a drop in the numbers employed in 'retail sale of food and beverages', which indicates a trend towards dining out.

The sharpest decline in occupations was in 'functional managers and directors' which dropped to just 2,575, down almost 16,800, or 86.7pc.
