Bus numbers 14, 15 and 140, which all travel to areas in Dublin 6, have had to travel along alternative routes since works on the new line began in June 2013.

However, a Dublin councillor is urging the transport company to allow the buses to access the square again, saying the move would benefit both locals and visitors.

Luas Cross City is an extension of the Green Line which links with the Red Line, and continues northwards to Broombridge in North Dublin (interchange with Iarnród Éireann station). The extension began at the existing St . Stephen ' s Green Green Line stop.

"For many people this was a major but presumed temporary inconvenience.

"I recently secured agreement that Dublin City Council would convene a meeting with the National Transport Authority to discuss the restoration of the 14, 15 and 140 bus routes to travel via St Stephens Green."

Councillor Freehill said that it was "unacceptable" that the company was continuing to deprive people travelling from Dublin 6 of public transport to St Stephen's Green.

She claims to have been contacted by a number of people working as far away as Mount Street, as well as older people, who say they are unable to walk from as far away as Georges Street.

Councillor Freehill added: "Restoring the routes would provide more direct access to cultural institutions including the National Museum and Library, the National Gallery and Concert Hall.

"It would also provide a closer direct link to the St. Stephen's Green Shopping Centre, and Grafton St area."

Dublin Bus has been contacted for comment.
