The alarm was raised at 5.20am when emergency crews responded to an incident near Shannon Bridge.

Rescue 115 -the Shannon-based Coast Guard helicopter -and crews from Limerick City Fire and Rescue were on the scene minutes after the CCTV footage was viewed.

It is understood extensive searches have taken place on the river since shortly after 5.30am, while plans are being put in place for diving operations.

Meanwhile, gardai from Henry Street are also at the scene, while National Ambulance Service personnel are nearby.

EMERGENCY crews were dispatched to the river Shannon this Wednesday afternoon having been alerted to reports of a person entering the water near Limerick city centre. However, nothing was found and the search operation was called off shortly before 5pm.

It is understood that no person had been found by 10.30am and the search is continuing.

A source said: “At Approximately 5.20am this morning (Tuesday) Limerick City Fire Service were dispatched by Munster Regional Fire Control to a report of a man entering the river Shannon from the Shannon Bridge.

“Three Units of the City’s Fire Service along with its Swiftwater Rescue Crews & Rescue Boat - FireSwift attended. A thorough search of the river was carried out, however no person was found. It’s believed the man was seen on Garda CCTV entering the water.

“Coast Guard Helicopter R115 also attended at first light to search the area. The search will continue this morning.”
