The trial of Patrick Hutch Jnr (25) got underway this afternoon with the prosecution’s opening statement being delivered before the three-judge Special Criminal Court.

He is pleading not guilty to the murder of David Byrne (34), who was shot dead at a boxing weigh-in in the north Dublin hotel on February 5, 2016.

Mr Hutch, of Champions Avenue in the north inner city, also denies unlawfully possessing three assault rifles and magazines in suspicious circumstances.

Sean Gillane SC, for the prosecution, was delivering his opening statement before judges Tony Hunt, Patricia Ryan and Ann Ryan at the non-jury court.

Earlier, a large contingent of gardai from the public order unit were seen arriving at the Criminal Courts of Justice.

The trial is expected to last two weeks.

Mr Byrne, from Raleigh Square, Crumlin died from multiple gunshot wounds he suffered when gunmen opened fire in the hotel just after 2pm, during a weigh-in for a boxing event called “clash of the clans.”

He was pronounced dead at the scene and could not be visually identified due his injuries. He was formally identified using fingerprint records.

Two other men were injured in the shooting at the event, while families with children fled in terror.

The Regency Hotel, on the Swords Road in Dublin 9, was renamed last year.
