  Hutch family member stabbed in assault at city home An under-threat member of the Hutch family is recovering after he was stabbed at his city home. Ross Hutch (25), who has previously been targeted in several assaults, was attacked at around 10.15pm last night in Dublin's north inner city.Gardaí believe the nephew of Gerry 'The Monk' Hutch was stabbed and received an injury to his head. However, Hutch was conscious when emergency services responded and he spoke to officers at the scene.Detectives believe that a man well-known to Hutch was behind the attack and was at the scene when officers arrived.

A major Garda operation was put in place from early morning for the first day of the trial of Patrick Hutch, who is accused of murder.

Mr Hutch, 25, from Champions Avenue in Dublin’s north inner city, is on trial for the murder of David Byrne at a boxing weigh-in at the Regency Hotel in the capital in February 2016.

He is also charged with possessing three AK47 assault rifles in connection with the shooting.

The trial is being heard before judges Tony Hunt, Patricia Ryan and Ann Ryan.

Yesterday, David Byrne’s parents, Sadie and James Byrne, were in court to hear evidence about their son’s death. The court heard Mr Byrne died from six gunshot sounds to his head, face, abdomen and thighs from a ‘high-violence weapon’.

And as he lay injured in the reception of the hotel, one of the gunmen, dressed in a Garda uniform, jumped on the front desk and ‘calmly and coldly’ shot him again.

Another man, who was dressed as a woman, also took part in the raid and was seen  carrying what appeared to be a handgun and shouting ‘he’s not f***ing here’, and ‘I couldn’t find him’.

Patrick Hutch was asked to stand up in the dock to address the court when the charges of murder and possession of firearms were put to him.

Dressed in a light grey suit and white shirt, Mr Hutch replied, ‘not guilty, your honour’ to  both charges when they were read out to him.

David Byrne, 34 from Crumlin, south Dublin, was shot dead during a boxing weigh-in at the Regency Hotel on February 5, 2016.

Yesterday, prosecuting counsel Sean Gillane set out  he State’s case and told the court that the father-of-two was the victim of a ‘well-resourced carefully planned murderous attack’ and that the way in which he died ‘displayed perfected callousness’.

In his opening statement, Mr Gillane told the court that the State is satisfied that six people were involved in the murder of David Byrne, three whom were dressed as gardaí, a man  dressed as a woman, another man who wore a flat cap and a getaway driver.

He told the court the State will argue that the man dressed as a woman and wearing a wig  is Patrick Hutch and that two gardaí based in Mountjoy Garda Station identified him from a

photograph taken by the Sunday World Newspaper on the day of the shooting.

He said Kevin Murray is the man with the flat cap and is now deceased.

Mr Gillane told the court the weigh-in at the Regency was attended by ‘boxers, managers, families and members of the public, including men, women and children’.
