Last week, his brother Barry revealed that Michael was showing signs of recovery and ‘could hear again’ but was still heavily sedated.

He explained, ‘This day, last week, life, as we knew it for Michael, was hanging in the balance and yet here today I am thrilled to tell you that Michael is making excellent progress.

‘Michael, who faced an unexpected set back at the weekend, has since been gradually weaned off sedation. Michael is now breathing on his own, he has been communicating for shorts periods with family members and is able to recall some vital information from before the incident.’

Mr Hyndman explained that the family felt ‘incredibly blessed’, thanking the 568 donors for the almost £17,000 (€19,000) they had raised in the space of a week.

The update continues, ‘He now faces further assessments, intense therapy and not to mention a 2nd surgery to reinsert the skull that was removed. He has a long road ahead but as he’s demonstrated already, he is strong and he doesn’t intend giving up anytime soon.’

For the time being, the family has decided to withdraw the money from the GoFundMe in order to transfer it to the beneficiaries.

Barry Hyndman finished: ‘On behalf of Michael and the family I Thank you once again for all your support over the past week. You are incredible people who’ve gone above and beyond to help s us all on this difficult journey.’
