HOUSING Minister Eoghan Murphy has been accused of being incompetent over the miscalculation of homeless figures. Sinn Fein ’s housing spokesman Eoin O Broin questioned the minister ’s ability to do his job as Mr Murphy confirmed that “significant miscategorisations” had been discovered while

Eoghan Murphy, who took office a year ago today, faced heavy criticism in the Dáil on Wednesday over the mounting problems in the housing sector.

The Minister has been accused of being ‘not confident or not fit’ for office, while Sinn Féin has said it is actively ‘considering’ tabling a motion of no confidence before the Dail summer recess on July 12.

Sinn Féin housing spokesman Eoin O'Bróin levelled the charge at the Dublin Bay South TD, but Murphy insists he has not failed in his role.

He responded during the announcement of cabinet approval for a NAMA run fund which aims to build 6,000 more houses.

CSO figures revealed that 14,446 new homes were completed last year, an increase of almost 50pc on 2016 — but some 4,825 fewer than previously believed.

But Minister Murphy insists he is getting the job done and also slammed a Sinn Fein billboard which appeared outside government buildings this week that said the housing crisis is getting worse.

‘Today’s CSO figures confirm that Rebuilding Ireland is working. They say we’re not building — that’s not true. They say we’re not attacking vacancy — that’s not true.‘We’re a young government, we’re ambitious for the future of our country and there is a lot of work we have to do.

‘We’re making progress. They’re making posters.’
