Crumlin's Children Hospital is to conduct a review after a patient was wrongly told she did not have a cancer gene.

The woman is currently being treated for an aggressive form of ovarian cancer.

Doctors were told last month that the woman had tested positive for a a cancer gene, which she tested negative for in 2009, The Sunday Times reports.

The woman at the centre of the scandal issued a statement through her solicitor Caoimhe Haughey, who said the patient is in a "grave situation".

The statement read: "I was denied the opportunity for intervention and preventative treatment for almost 10 years which is going to have life-altering and permanent consequences for me.

"Anyone who has undergone BRCA tests at Our Lady's Children's Hospital Crumlin needs to contact their doctors and demand a full review immediately.

"There needs to be a review of all BRCA tests carried out by [the hospital] over the past decade to ensure no one else is at risk."

Crumlin hospital told RTE News that it has an open and positive approach to dealing with incidents, following the HSE Incident Management Framework.

Officials also said that in July of this year the Department of Clinical Genetics was given extra resources to improve services.
