Tributes have been paid to a young Irish student who was tragically killed in a hit and run in the Netherlands last weekend.

Aoife O'Connell, 21, was hit by a car at 4:30am on Saturday morning in the city of Utrecht.

Local reports say the Cork native was found on the road by a passerby and died before the ambulance arrived.

Dutch Police confirmed that the driver of the car involved fled the incident but later presented himself at a local Police Station.

Ms O'Connell, from Ballintemple, was a student in UCC but had been on Erasmus for the year in HU University of Applied Sciences in Utrecht.

"We had so much fun in Utrecht together.

"I will always be grateful for having the chance to meet her.

"I can’t imagine the pain of her sister and her parents and all my thoughts are going with them.

It is believed Aoife's parents John and Deirdre have headed out to Utrecht and hope to bring her body home soon.

A spokesperson for UCC expressed their condolences and said they are proving assistance to Aoife's family and friends.

In a statement they said: "UCC wishes to extend its deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Aoife O’Connell, who sadly passed away in the Netherlands at the weekend.

"UCC is providing support to Aoife's family and friends at this difficult time."

The Ambassador of the Netherlands to Ireland Adriaan Palm also expressed his condolences on a trip to UCC on Tuesday afternoon.

Mr Palm said: "I express my sincere condolences for the passing of UCC student Aoife O’Connell, who was killed in a crash in Utrecht this weekend."

The Department of Foreign Affairs are aware of the incident and are providing consular assistance.
