Met Eireann have warned that there is a risk of snow in some parts of the country as temperatures plummet to -2C.

The St Patrick's Day weekend looks set to be bitterly cold, with widespread frost also anticipated.

Conditions will remain relatively mild on Thursday and Friday with some scattered showers, but things are expected to become more unsettled towards the end of the week.

"However, it will turn much colder everywhere and some of the showers will turn wintry, especially in the north and west, but in other parts also, with hail, sleet and a risk of snow. There is also a risk of thunder.

Conditions will improve slightly on St Patrick's Day itself, as weather experts predict a dry but still cold night.

Looking ahead to next week however, Met Eireann suggested temperatures could improve significantly, potentially reaching into the high teens by the middle of the week.

The forecast for next Monday to Friday reads: "Early indications suggest that it will be mainly dry and settled, but there will be a little patchy light rain or drizzle at times, mainly along western and northwestern coasts.
