Turbans and hijabs are in, tattoos are out… and now it has emerged that all prospective gardaí must supply a DNA sample if recruited.

A booklet for the latest Garda recruitment drive offers notes for applicants and conditions of service should they succeed.

It says that DNA samples must be taken from all new gardaí so that they can be eliminated when DNA is gathered from crime scenes, and also to show if gardaí have contaminated the crime scene.
