An elderly Dublin woman was hospitalised and left needing an 'operation on her hip' following a horrific attack in South Dublin on Bank Holiday Monday.

The 89-year-old was attacked in the car park of Kilnamanagh Shopping Centre on the Mayberry Road in Tallaght, just outside the Dunnes Stores in the area.

One eye-witness said that two lads pulled up in a car and took her handbag and money.

They said: "The handbag was over the woman's shoulder at the time of the attack and the two men drove up beside her and dragged the bag and her alongside the car until they eventually took the bag."

The woman was hospitalised following the incident and is said to have 'broken her hip' during the attack.

Another eye-witness told Dublin Live: "The attack took place around 11am. I was getting my nails done at the time in the area.

"I didn’t see it happen but I saw the elderly woman on the floor being attended to.

"There was also Gardai on the scene. At first, I actually thought it might have been a hit and run until I heard that she had been robbed.

In a statement to Dublin Live, a spokesman for the Gardai said: "Gardaí in Tallaght are investigating a robbery of a handbag from a woman in her later 80s during an incident at Kilnamanagh Shopping Centre on the 6/5/2019.

They added: "The car drove off at speed. The woman was knocked to the ground and suffered cuts to her arms and legs. The bag contained a sum of cash along with personal items.

Dublin Live contacted the Dunnes Stores at Kilnamanagh Shopping Centre who said that they "don't release statements to the media and would not be commenting on this matter".
