A brave garda died in a diving accident – while on standby to search for a missing fisherman.

Father-of-four Dave Hearne, who was off-duty at the time, was off Hook Head, Co Wexford, when .

The hero officer was with a local sub aqua club in a voluntary capacity after a number of RNLI lifeboats attended the scene.

Garda Hearne, who was in his 40s, was a native of Fethard-on-Sea, Co Wexford but had been stationed in Waterford for a number of years.

The son of one of the country’s leading ploughmen died in a horrific farming accident when he fell into a vat of molasses on the family farm. The accident happened while Martin, 33, was changing a pipe in the molasses tank on the farm at Foulksmills, County Wexford .

Mr Hearne, who has been honoured for his part in a number of dramatic water rescues, was brought to the surface in critical condition by colleagues.

He was airlifted to Waterford Regional Airport but was pronounced dead despite attempts to resuscitate him.

Garda and rescue colleagues in Waterford are understood to be shocked at the death of the family man, who was highly respected amongst colleagues and the local community.

“He was an all-around good guy and he was always trying his best to help out families, on duty or off duty,” said local county councillor Jim Griffin who, as officer-in-charge at the Dunmore East Coast Guard station, liaised with Garda Hearne on a number of occasions.

“It’s a very sad occasion - a young man in his prime. The force needs young men and women with the bravery and the skill set that Dave brought to the job.

Mr Hearne has been hailed as a hero and took part in a number of daring rescue missions over the years.

In 2007, he rescued two men from the river in Waterford city on the same day.

In July 2014, he rescued two men in just ten days.

During the first incident, he rescued a man who had gone into the River Suir near Sallypark, Co Waterford.

Just two weeks later, he rescued a young man from the water in Dungarvan.

Later that summer, Garda Hearne was run over by a speeding motorist - but then managed to get back to his car and chase after the culprit, arresting him shortly afterwards.

Garda John McCallion, 48, was found unresponsive beside his bicycle near his home in Swinford, Co Mayo on Friday evening.

Emergency services attended the scene at 7pm and Mr McCallion body was removed to Mayo University Hospital for post-mortem examination.

John McCallion was a serving Garda and was a brother of Garda Robert McCallion, who died when he was hit by a speeding car while on duty in Letterkenny, Co Donegal in 2009.

The dead man has been named locally as Sean Breen (24), who was a native of Annacarty. The accident occurred at around 5.30am on the R661 road which links Dundrum to Thurles.
