Ms Bailey, who represents Dun Laoghaire in the Dail, confirmed on Saturday she has dropped her personal injuries case against the Dean Hotel on Harcourt Street in Dublin, where she suffered a fall from a swing in July 2015.

She had claimed she suffered serious injuries in the fall from the swing, hanging in an area leading to the hotel’s restaurant. But Ms Bailey revealed on Saturday she has withdrawn the claim despite having medical bills as a result of the accident.

Despite rejecting the offer, a claim for hospital and dental costs has been included in the Dún Laoghaire TD's personal injuries action against the hotel.

She added that she wanted to “draw a line in the sand” on the issue and focus on her political work. But Fine Gael colleagues claimed that her actions damaged the party as candidates campaigned door-to-door in their constituencies ahead of last Friday’s local and European elections.

Leo Varadkar said on Sunday that Ms Bailey’s actions may have caused the party “reputational damage”. He added that she did not consult with her party before taking the case against the city centre hotel.
