Forbidden Fruit festival-goers will be hoping for sunshine this weekend but the west and northwest is still being lashed by "persistent" rain. A Status Yellow rainfall warning is in place for three counties this morning with up to 35mm of rain set to drench Donegal, Mayo and Galway.

Met Eireann issued the alert on Thursday morning and it will remain in place until 3pm on Friday. A forecaster said: "Spells of persistent rain will give totals of 25mm to 35 mm in parts, mainly over high ground." However, conditions will be more pleasant in the south and east where temperatures could reach highs of 21C.

And parts of Leinster and Munster could see highs of even warmer than 20C. A forecaster said: "Rather overcast at first today with patches of light rain or drizzle; hill and coastal fog too.

A forecaster said: "Today will be mild, humid and mostly cloudy. Rain this morning, mainly in west Munster, Connacht, Ulster and north Leinster. Mainly dry further south. "This afternoon and evening, rain in the west and north will move eastwards. Highest temperatures of 15C to 21C with moderate to fresh southwest winds, warmest in the south and east."

Revellers heading to Forbidden Fruit and Bloom in the Park tomorrow  will enjoy mainly dry conditions with the odd bright spell but it will turn rainy later.

A forecaster said: "However, rain and drizzle will spread over Munster and Leinster. "During the afternoon, rain will develop in the west and become more widespread in the evening. "Highest temperatures of 15C to 19C with light to moderate southerly breezes."

Meanwhile, Sunday morning will start off rainy with sunshine and showers during the morning and early afternoon. Some heavy bursts are likely in Ulster and northwest Connacht. It will be less humid with top temperatures of around 14C to 18C but it will feel cooler in the fresh and gusty westerly wind, strong along Atlantic coasts.
