Met Eireann predicts that the most frequent showers of rain will be in the northwest of Ireland, and later today in the south.

The east and the midlands are set to see good dry periods, however, and highest temperatures are meant to reach 13 to 17 degrees.

Moderate southwesterly winds will become light later in the day, forecasters said.

Tonight, scattered showers will merge into longer spells of rain in the south and southwest, with the mercury falling to between seven and 10 degrees.

Of the week ahead, Met Eireann added: "Wednesday will be another rather cool day. It will start largely dry with good sunshine but in the afternoon showers will develop, some heavy and thundery.

"Highest temperatures on the low side for the time of year, expected to reach just 11 to 14 degrees in light northerly or variable breezes.

"Once again the showers will die out early in the night with a chilly night to follow.
