But she admitted that there’s “very little skill” in the practice, and said the weather forecast for the next four weeks looks “fairly average”.

“Basically for the rest of this week it’s cool and wet, and for next week, cool and some showers (but) not as wet.

“And there’s no real signal for week three or week four, where it looks fairly average.

“There’s very little skill for monthly forecasts at our latitude and that’s why we don’t issue them to the public.”

Ms Cusack also explained how Ireland hasn’t experienced a good spell of sunshine since Easter.

She said there is a “clash zone” over Ireland at the moment - and this is what is causing rain.

Speaking to Sean O’Rourke on RTE Radio One, she explained: “We have variable weather at our latitudes. It’s just the Irish weather. There’s huge natural variability.

“And the simple fact is that between 50 and 55 degrees north there is the boundary zone between cool polar air and warm tropical air.

“And where those two air masses clash you get this band of rain.

“And that band of rain has been over Ireland and is over Ireland at the moment for the last two days.

“When it’s cooler we’re on the northern side of that clash zone and when it’s warmer we’re on the southern side.

“So at Easter the tropical air was up over us and now, the clash zone is over us and the cooler air is down over us.

“That’s how we forecast the weather, is predicting where that clash zone is.”
