Kilkenny man Peter Donnelly died after the horrific incident on O'Connell Street at 1.40am on Tuesday.

He was rushed to the Mater Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

In a bizarre Facebook post on Monday, the deceased, believed to be 39-years-old, had told his friends that it would be his "last day".

One friend commented: "Rest in peace, Peter. What a man." Another said: "Love you always and forever."

A man, 28, was arrested in connection with the incident.

A man has died after being stabbed in O ' Connell Street in Dublin city centre. It happened at about 01:40 local time on Tuesday close to the General Post Office. RTÉ reports that the man, from Kilkenny, was stabbed several times following an altercation with a man who he had been talking to.

He was taken to Store Street Garda Station, before being brought to hospital where is was being treated for minor injuries. His detention will restart once that treatment is complete

It is thought both men were homeless, with the deceased only having lived in the capital for a short time.

Forensic experts and gardai examined the area and blood trails from the attack were also seen spread across the street.

Gardai recovered a suspected murder weapon.

On Tuesday, a source told the Irish Mirror: “A female garda on foot patrol in the area spotted two men talking earlier – there wasn’t enough to effect an arrest at that time.
