A third said: "Rip Peter Donnelly. May you get the best bed in heaven."

Another person added: "Peter helped a lot of people around Kilkenny. He was brilliant to them."

A 28-year-old man was arrested close to the scene by gardai following the attack. He suffered a suspected stabbing injury and was taken to hospital.

A source said: “A female garda on foot patrol in the area spotted two men talking earlier – there wasn’t enough to effect an arrest at that time.
