Leo Varadkar TD is the current Taoiseach ; he took office on 14 June 2017,[4] following his election as leader of Fine Gael on 2 June 2017.[5] Varadkar is In 2010 Taoiseach Brian Cowen, in the midst of highly unpopular spending cuts after the global financial crash, maintained his position as Taoiseach .

Is Leo Varadkar a high-flyer or top of the flops? That is the question much of the public must be wondering as he today celebrates his second anniversary as Taoiseach.

Between meeting Kylie Minogue and late night Brexit stand-offs, Leo has proved that he can be the showman or the strategist.

But while he has some notable achievements under his belt in those two years, there are many areas where he has no cause to celebrate.

There’s no doubt he was a breath of fresh air when he swept into office in June 2017, the young gay son of an Indian immigrant father and Irish mother.

He said there could well be other women who were put in similar positions to Ms Moyihan. She became pregnant outside of wedlock after joining An Garda Síochána in the 1980s and was shamed into giving up her baby son for adoption. Ms Moyihan from Kanturk, Co Cork was subjected to an investigation and threatened with dismissal.

But since then, the gloss has worn off and he has had to get down to the tough business of government.

Here we assess how he has done so far on a number of key issues and mark the report card of our Trendy Taoiseach.

BREXIT

Credit where credit is due, the Taoiseach has played a blinder on Brexit. While the entire House of Commons is in an unholy state, Leo has come out looking like the consummate statesman in comparison.

The victory on guaranteeing the backstop was a major diplomatic triumph and even that alone deservedly earns Leo top marks.

Grade: A+

HOUSING

Leo is not a straight As student. The only A he gets on housing is an A for abysmal.

His minister in charge, Eoghan Murphy, is complete out of his depth. But as his line manager, Leo must take ultimate responsibility.

The scandal that sees over a record of over 10,000 people without a home, 4,000 of those children, leaves us with no other option but to fail the Taoiseach here.

Grade: F

DEFENCE

Not everybody knows, but the Taoiseach is also our Minister for Defence. He took the job off an under-performing Paul Kehoe and demoted him to junior minister in the department, but things have gone from bad to worse since then.

The Defence Forces is facing daily crises with a recruitment and retention probems placing huge strain on limited resources - while morale is at an all-time low.

Grade: D

ABORTION

Another victory here. Leo sailed the wave and was at the helm of the ship when the campaign to ‘Repeal the 8th’ amendment in the Constitution on abortion was overturned.

How did a 20- year -old student who tanked with just 380 votes in his first local election outing in 1999 rise to the highest political office in Ireland? Conor McMorrow of our political staff spoke to some of the people who have witnessed first-hand Leo Varadkar ’ s meteoric rise to the office of Taoiseach .

This showcased Leo at his best as the head of a seemingly liberal, progressive government in tune with the younger generations of modern Ireland. He only loses a few marks because it wasn’t all his own work.

Grade: B+

EDUCATION

There has been no real progress here. The quality of our education is among the best in the world, but its done mainly because of great teachers, working with stretched resources.

Granted, things haven’t really gotten worse under Leo’s watch, but with education being the foundation for the future success of a country, the Government needs to step up before things start going seriously south. Could do better.

Grade: B-

HEALTH

As a former practising doctor, his old mentors would be very disappointed with his performance here.

Advice was once given to Leo that e shou,d aim to get out of health as quick as he could when he was minister there and do as little as possible to avoid messing up. He did that and hasn’t looked back to see how things have deteriorated. A sad fail.

Mr Varadkar is an honerous individual. TRUMP

If we are going on last week’s performance at Shannon - it went off without a hitch - Leo would be close to getting an A here, definitely a B+. But we have to take it in the round instead.

He made a major gaffe in March last year when a joke went wrong about Leo’s possible intervention against wind farms near Donald’s precious golf course at Doonbeg. He has recovered, but he needs to work harder to get better marks.
