After weeks of dreary weather, the summer may finally be on its way.

Met Eireann has revealed we can expect balmy highs of 19C or possibly 20C with “good sunshine” this week.

It’s been a joyless June so far with gloomy conditions dominating – a far cry from last year’s heatwave.

More rain fell in Dublin in the first 12 days of the month than in the entire of June and July 2018 while the UK has been battered by flash floods.

But don’t break out the BBQ just yet as some unsettled conditions are also predicted.

Parts of the country will see heavy showers today, most frequent in the north and west but the south and east will soak up some glorious sunshine.

A forecaster said: “Sunny spells will develop in the afternoon with highest temperatures of 15C to 18C.”

However, there will be some scattered showers in the east later.

Meanwhile, tomorrow looks set to be the warmest day this week, reaching highs of 19C or perhaps 20C in places.

There will be some scattered showers in Ulster and north Connacht.

The forecaster added: “Further showers are expected on Wednesday but they should be well-scattered in the east and south with good sunny spells.”

The north-west and west will see 14C to 16C with highs of 19C possible in the south and east.

Thursday will be a fresher and slightly cooler day as winds become moderate west to northwest. There will be scattered showers with good sunny spells.

The showers will be more frequent or heavy in the northwest and north. Top temperatures will be 13C to 16C or 17C, highest in the south and east.

Met Eireann is forecasting a hot, dry and sunny day , as a brief heatwave looks set to arrive. Some areas can expect to see afternoon temperatures of up to 24C - making it hotter than parts of the Canary Islands. A forecaster said: "Today will be a dry, warm and sunny day. It will be humid with top temperatures reaching 20 to 24 degrees. "But it will be a few degrees cooler along northern and eastern coasts in the onshore light to moderate northeasterly breeze, which will freshen along south and west coasts later.
