Irish Rail has been heavily criticised after an elderly passenger slipped between the train and platform and received a nasty gash to her head on a journey from Dublin Heuston on Sunday.

The woman in question was travelling on the 1:40pm Westport train from the capital and was subsequently getting a connecting train in Mayo when the incident took place.

As she disembarked the Dublin train at Manulla Junction in order to catch a linking journey to Ballina, she slipped between the second train and platform as she tried to get on board.

Passenger, Martina Gallagher, who was riding the Westport train to Castlebar told Dublin Live that "Irish Rail failed to provide emergency assistance when needed" and were "very slow to respond".

She said: "The elderly lady was found by another passenger and she and another person assisted in helping the lady out and getting her belongings at first. I then started providing care for her."

"When I asked an Irish Rail employee to call an ambulance, the response I got was 'we'll get her to Ballina and get an ambulance then'."

Martina, who is a nurse, was told by workers that there was no access route for emergency services to attend the station at Manulla.

She continued: I told the employee that I was happy for her to travel with me to Castlebar where we could have an ambulance ready to bring her to the hospital there but she wanted to travel on to Ballina."

She noticed that the elderly lady was bleeding from a nasty gash on the back of her head and was very shaken after the ordeal.

Martina continued: "The lady was adamant to get to Ballina after the slip but when she touched her head and felt the blood, she got a shock.

"I got consent to touch her and to move her. I asked for her name and contacted her next of kin to let them know she was hurt.

"She had a green scarf on and I took it off and got her to hold it against her wound to stop the bleeding.

Martina added that she was "annoyed" with staff when she had been asked to get back on the main train to Westport.

"I was angry. I was providing first aid to the poor lady and making sure she was okay, I felt that she may have sustained a head injury.

"I was ordered back on the train and was told that I was causing a delay for passengers.

"Even though, when I eventually got back on board, there was a number of people crying who were worried about the elderly lady."

"I have to say well done to Lisa Marie Carey and Callie Moran who helped the woman too - they were amazing throughout the whole ordeal."

She added: "There was also a man in an orange hi-vis assisting the old lady too.

"He was working on the Manulla to Ballina train that the lady was boarding. He asked me what I thought and promised me that they would get her an ambulance in Ballina."

Despite the help of that particular worker, Martina said she was "disgusted and appalled" by the service on the Dublin train.

"I asked for a first aid kit to provide first aid to the woman and they had to get it off the main train. There should have been at least one kit on the connecting train too.

"Surely it's a massive health and safety issue that needs to be investigated."

Martina concluded: "That's my main concern. Irish Rail should have adequate equipment on every train, if not every second carriage because who knows what can go wrong.

"As well as this, every train station should have an access route that makes it easy for emergency services to attend.

"Anyone could have a medical emergency on the train and time is crucial in these events."

"I wish the woman a speedy recovery and I really hope she is okay after the incident."

In a statement to Dublin Live, a spokeswoman for Irish Rail confirmed that: "A customer fell while boarding the 16:42hrs Manulla Junction to Ballina service on Sunday evening, slipping between train and platform as she went to board."

She added: "Both employees and customers went to her assistance, and the departure of both the Westport and Ballina services were held while assistance was provided.

"The customer declined medical attention at the scene and travelled onwards to Ballina.

"But, an ambulance was called for in Ballina as a precaution and was at the station on the train's arrival.

"We are grateful for the response of our staff and customers in assisting the woman involved."
