A Corkman got a bit of a shock early this morning when he spotted a train carriage in Dublin sporting anything but your standard Irish Rail livery.

Mark Cuffe was travelling from the capital to his hometown when he saw the carriage that had been sprayed from head to toe by vandals.

"I had to take a step back it was so much," says Mark.

"Whoever did it must have taken hours - they went over the whole carriage, windows, doors, you could see some of the strokes of the paint-can. They did one carriage and then tagged the others with their names - they must have been at it all night".

Mark is the owner of the well-known Marks Models model and hobby shops in Dublin and on Oliver Plunkett Street in Cork. So he knows a thing or two about painting trains - but they tend to be on the smaller side.

A spokesperson for Irish Rail said the train had been vandalised in Heuston Station overnight and was taken out of service to be sent for cleaning. The bad news for the taggers is that the train is expected to be back in service in 24-hours - totally cleaned of all their spray-painted "art'.

Residents in the Aston Village area of Drogheda, Co Louth, are “hugging their children tighter” after 14-year-old Jill Amante drowned at a nearby beach on Friday. Jill was enjoying the sunshine with two friends at Seapoint beach near Termonfeckin, Co Louth on Friday afternoon. But while the three young people were swimming, Jill got into difficulty due to the riptide. Rescue efforts proved unsuccessful, and Jill sadly passed away at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda. Local councillor Ged Nash said the community is uniting in grief around Jill’s family following this “dreadful” tragedy.
