If you fire a gun into the air, the bullet will travel up to a mile high (depending on the angle of the shot and the power of the gun ). This 2015 article from The Trace, for example, describes two cases of children killed by falling bullets apparently fired during Fourth of July celebrations in 2011 and 2012.

A BOY aged five found a loaded gun yesterday that was ready to be used in a bloody gangland feud.

He picked up the weapon at a West Dublin housing estate but luckily put it down without trying to fire it. A second child raised the alarm.

Speaking about yesterday's incident Sinn Fein's Breda Hanaphy said the community was completely shocked and praised the young child who raised the alarm.

She said: “I’m absolutely flabbergasted, you couldn’t get any more irresponsible than putting it where young people are playing.

“It’s really hard to get your head around why someone would leave it there.

“We can’t keep our children in but now we’re all scared - can we not let them out and play? Is this going to happen again? We can’t have this happening and families shouldn’t have to fear this.

The horror incident comes just five days after a man was shot twice in the stomach in the same estate.

The gun was found at the entrance and was believed to be loaded when it was picked up by a five-year-old who put it down before another child then took it.

The second kid then alerted an adult who rang gardai.

A garda spokesperson confirmed they recovered the firearm and told Dublin Live the investigation is still in its early stages.

They said: “Gardai in Blanchardstown have recovered a firearm in the Mulhuddart area of Dublin 15, today Thursday 4th July 2019. Investigations are at an early stage and are ongoing.”

The areas around Blanchardstown have been plagued with gangland activity as separate feuds have exploded over the past months - some of which have been murderous.

It’s not the first time kids in the area have been threatened by the ongoing violence as a nearby school was the scene of a botched hit attempt last April.

A lone gunman sprayed bullets outside Riversdale Community College just as parents were ready to collect their kids.

The school was put on a temporary lockdown as teachers kept the children indoors while gardai secured the roadways outside.

A man was also shot twice in the stomach in the same estate just last Saturday in an apparent case of mistaken identity.

One theory behind yesterday's discovery is that the gang responsible for Saturday hid the gun and planned to return to whack the rival they previously missed.

The man, 40s, was rushed to Connolly Hospital in a serious condition after the daylight blast which happened as kids were out playing around 5.30pm.
