A Garda spokeswoman said: “The boy was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, where he was pronounced dead.

“A file will be prepared for the Coroners Court.”

Fianna Fail councillor for the area Conor Keelan told of his shock at the death.

He said: “I don’t know the family involved in this tragedy, but this is the second drowning incident to occur in the Co Louth area over the past two weeks which makes it all the more tragic.”

A ten -year-old boy has died following a drowning incident at a house in Carlingford , Co Louth . Gardaí were called to the scene this morning. The boy was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, where he was pronounced dead. The death is being treated as a tragic accident.

This is the third time in just two weeks that the county has been struck by tragedy. On June 28, Jill Amante died after getting into difficulty while swimming at Seapoint Beach near Drogheda.

The 14-year-old was remembered as a “bright, exuberant” girl.

And just last weekend, seven-year-old Chantelle Keenan died after a car parked in a driveway in Drogheda rolled over her. It is understood a number of children were at the tragic scene.

Meanwhile, Roger Sweeney of Irish Water Safety said extra vigilance is needed as “more people are using the water” and there is an “average of five drownings every fortnight”.

Figures released by Irish Water Safety last week showed 103 people died in Irish waters this year – six less than in 2017 and 20 fewer than 2016.
