The warm spell will break today with wet and cloudy conditions expected and some "heavy and persistent" showers.

While yesterday was humid with highs of 22C recorded in Dublin and Shannon, we'll see a dip in temperatures today, with highs of 16C to 19C.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Cloudy and wet in many parts of the north and west this morning with outbreaks of rain quickly extending eastwards, turning heavy and persistent at times.

"The rain will turn more showery in the afternoon and evening. Some bright or sunny spells will develop later in the west.
