The Taoiseach said it was not his intention to hold a general election this year, but "it may not be my call"

He said: “This time last year, I wrote to Micheál Martin suggesting that we agree that there will not be an election until the summer of 2020.

“He rejected that offer which I made in writing last summer and decided to connect the life of this Dail and this government to what happens in Westminster.

“So it’s he who has decided that the government is time limited by Brexit and the Dail is time limited, not me.”

No-deal Brexit raises chances of Irish border poll, warns Dominic Grieve

No-deal Brexit raises chances of Irish border poll, warns Dominic Grieve The former UK attorney general said the status of Northern Ireland would be ‘thrown into jeopardy’.

However, Mr Martin said earlier this week that a general election in the coming months would be “irresponsible” and has previously hinted an election for spring 2020.

"That takes us well beyond the Budget, takes us well beyond October the 31st and we’ll have far greater clarity at that stage then as to where we are.”

Mr Varadkar has now said he is open to compromising with the new UK Prime Minister regarding the backstop.

Both Tory leader candidates, Jeremy Hunt and Boris Johnson have said that they would not be willing to accept the backstop, even if a time limit was set.

No-deal Brexit raises chances of Irish border poll, warns Dominic Grieve The former UK attorney general said the status of Northern Ireland would be ‘thrown into jeopardy’.

"I’m going to have to listen to the Prime Minister whenever he’s elected and I’ll have a chance to see if they have any meaningful or workable suggestions.

“If they don’t, obviously we can’t depart in anyway from the withdrawal agreement or the backstop which the European Union has said very clearly are not open for renegotiations.”

“If ‘no deal’ happens it will be as a consequence of the decision made either by the British government or British parliament depending on what happens there.”

He also added that it could be a possibility that the backstop would apply to Northern Ireland only but knows this would not sit well with the DUP.

And said it was the UK who had insisted that the backstop should apply to the UK as a whole and it wasn’t “imposed” on them, it was co-designed by the EU, Ireand and the UK.

Boris plots early election to crush Labour 'while Jeremy Corbyn is still around' with aides tasked with getting Britain to the polls soon after Brexit is sorted

Boris plots early election to crush Labour 'while Jeremy Corbyn is still around' with aides tasked with getting Britain to the polls soon after Brexit is sorted The Tory frontrunner, who will become the UK's new Prime Minister next week if he defeats Jeremy Hunt in the leadership race, is said to have told aides to prepare for an election as early as next summer. The next election is not due until 2022, but the government's instability over recent months has prompted frequent speculation of an early poll. Speaking to The Times, Boris aides said the Tories wanted to exploit the 'groundwork' they had already done for a campaign against Mr Corbyn. 'There's a desire to get this done while Corbyn is still around.

He insisted he sees a route in avoiding a hard border on the island of Ireland but will still continue to step up preparations for a no-deal scenario.

When asked by RTE Radio One’s Sean O’Rourke if the Taoiseach believes the country’s ports are ready and whether infrastructure is in place for the transportation of food and animals in the case of a no-deal Brexit he said he is being told we are ready.

He said: “We’ve about 700 custom revenue, health and agricultural inspectors employed.

“We have the temporary infrastructure put in place in Dublin port and also in Dublin airport and Rosslare.

“I can’t see there not being delays. There’s going to be checks. Will there be potential delays at Dublin and Rosslare? Yes. Things won’t be the same but they will work.

“If there is ‘no deal’, tariffs will be imposed on goods coming in from the UK and Northern Ireland but that can be done electronically.”

Sinn Féin TD and spokesperson for Brexit Seán Crowe has called on an Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to clarify his position on the backstop.

Mr Crowe said: “A hard border on the island of Ireland is not in the interests of any who live or work in Ireland, north or south.

“I am calling on an Taoiseach to clarify this position and make it clear that there is no scenario in which his government would consent to any attempt water down the backstop to appease a new Brexiteer Prime Minister and their fantasist solutions to problems of their making.”

Meanwhile, Mr Varadkar believes his colleague and Housing Minister is “doing a very good job,” and never once thought of shifting him from the position.

And said he plans to see the 10,000 homeless figure decreasing next year.

He said: “Certainly he’s [Eoghan Murphy] not the person who caused the housing crisis, we know who is responsible for that.

“I think he will be a success, I think the job is only half done.”

Mr Varadkar also said President Donald Trump’s recent nasty comments towards four female US members of congress had “hallmarks of racism” but said he is not calling Trump a racist by any means.

He admitted he has being a victim of homophobia and racism from Twitter trolls.

He said: “Have you ever scrolled down my Twitter account, you should see the things they say.“

But I’ve a thick skin and I can take it. Scroll down and read the comments there’s plenty of racism, homophobia there but I’m a big boy I can take it.”
