Another 300 members of the Defence Forces have quit after years of being “treated with contempt” by the Government, a TD claimed. A record number have walked out leaving membership at an all time low, with almost 170 leaving in the first four months of this year. Officially, there are 8,751 soldiers, sailors and aircrew enlisted – down 300 on the figure for the end of May 2017.

He added: “While these figures obviously pre-date the recent publication of the Public Pay Commission Report on the Defence Forces. “I am not convinced that the recommendations contained in that report are likely to stem the exodus. “A very chilling finding was that 60% of enlisted personnel and non-commissioned officers have indicated that they intend to leave in the coming two years.”
