Talented footballer (15) killed in fall on holiday in Lanzarote Tributes have been paid to a promising young footballer from Co Meath who has died after suffering a horrific fall while on holiday in Lanzarote.

Tragic young teenager Mikey Leddy will be remembered with a minute's applause before Ireland's match with Switzerland next month.

The 15-year-old from Navan in Meath, died after falling from a height while on holidays with his family in Lanzarote on Monday.

Mikey was well-known as a talented sportsman in his local area and played both GAA and soccer.

And the Ireland team will honour his memory with a minute's applause before their Euro 2020 qualifier at the Aviva Stadium on 5 September.

Ireland manager Mick McCarthy said: “I was shocked when I heard the news of Mikey’s death and wish to send my condolences and that of everybody involved with the Irish team and the FAI to Mikey’s family at this sad time.

“We recently visited Meath for the Festival of Football and I am sure this tragedy has touched everyone involved with Johnstown FC and with football in the county.

"We will be proud to pay tribute to Mikey’s memory before the Switzerland game.”

Friends of the young teenager have also launched a campaign to have him remembered at one of Manchester United's upcoming games.

Mikey's pals are sharing an image of a jersey with his name on it and the hashtag #minute4mikey on social media and are asking others to share and tag the club.

The club host Chelsea on Sunday in their opening Premier League tie of the season at Old Trafford.
