He said: "It wasn't too big, because they had a bit of trouble getting the bike into the car.

"They did threaten me, shouting at me to get away from the bike. I don't think theuy could have backed up their threats buyt I wasn't taking any chances over a bike."

Ian said that the pair appeared quite young, but because they were wearing hoodies, he couldn't really see their faces. However, he added: "I reckon they were only 18-21."

Ian said the bike was a red and white Trek 1.7 58inch frame which he had kept in good condition, upgrading most of its components over the years.

There have been a number of reported bike thefts in the mountains in recent months.

The Dublin Cycling Campaign issued a warning back in June, tweeting that they had received reports of bike thieves in a van targeting solo cyclists in the Dublin & Wicklow Mountains and asking riders to be vigilant if cycling in the area.

They also cited a user's terrifying experience. The rider had posted: "A word of advice and warning. Don't go up Kippure or Sally Gap to Laragh on your own on a bike.

"I was assaulted yesterday by three fellas in a white Ford Transit van treying to steal my bike and phone. I managed to fight them off and luckily a car came along and I flagged them down and the van drove off.

"I reported it to Rathfarmham Gardai. They had a car up there 30 minutes earlier."
