Two women have made criminal complaints that they were sexually assaulted over the course of the week-long traditional music festival in Drogheda.

Major investigations into the reports are underway and being treated with the ‘utmost seriousness’, said a senior source.

It is understood both women were medically assessed in a hospital setting as is protocol. It got underway on August 11 and concluded last Sunday, August 18.

Gardaí had been fearful that criminals involved in the so-called Drogheda feud would ‘ruin’ this year’s Fleadh Cheoil. But gangland violence did not overshadow the event, according to sources. Gardaí rolled out visible armed patrols for the first time in the festival’s history this year. Detectives believe that the presence of armed officers was ‘effective’.

The source added: ‘The criminals involved in the feud did not try and cause carnage. But there was these two other serious allegations of serious sexual assault. ‘There was also the usual public order incidents over the course of the festival, mainly to do with drunkenness, which would be expected at such a major event with so many in attendance.’ A ‘beefed up’ policing plan was put in place by senior gardaí in the months preceding the festival because of the spiralling violence between two gangs in Drogheda.

As a consequence, for the first time since the Fleadh Cheoil was established in 1958, armed gardaí ‘made their presence visible’ during the seven-day festival.

There was also a major increase in Garda checkpoints and a significant increase in patrols. A senior source explained: ‘A major crime management plan was devised. The feud could not be ignored… There were concerns it could be used as an opportunity for the feuding criminals to carry out attacks. But that did not happen. There was proactive policing to ensure it didn’t.

‘Unfortunately there were these other two investigations launched over reported sexual attacks.’ A spokesman for the Fleadh Cheoil festival said last night: ‘No criminal matter of that nature has been brought to the attention of the Fleadh committee. But it would be a matter for An Garda Síochána.’
