A man has been arrested and another man taken to hospital following reported "scuffles" at a farmers' protest.

Farmers had gathered outside Liffey Meats, a meat processing plant, in Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan earlier today to demonstrate over prices for cattle they sell for slaughter.

At one point, lorries were failing to get access to the plant due to bales in front of the gates.

A man was arrested at around 1pm in relation to suspected breaches of the Public Order Act, it has been reported.

Another man was taken to hospital by ambulance following the incident.

He has called on Agriculture Minister Michael Creed to step in.

Mr Carthy said: "The incident in Ballyjamesduff is an extremely serious development.

The delegation has been carrying out inspections of plants to approve them as exporters to China.
