A few years ago you'd only see tents in the Skid Row area of L.A., but these days homeless encampments are all over Los Angeles County . On a recent visit, I

Two tents that were being used by homeless people in the capital were allegedly torched by thugs last night - with one couple described as "lucky" to survive.

Feed Our Homeless charity founder Tony Walsh hit out at the brutes and stressed one man “had to drag his partner out” from the flames.

Mr Walsh, who is also the chief executive of the organisation, said: “A gang of six people torched and burnt down a tent in the Phoenix Park [on Sunday night].

“Unfortunately there was a couple sleeping in the tent where the partner had to drag his partner out of the tent and this couple is very lucky to be alive.

Dozens say they are now homeless after court extends orders to vacate 'potential fire traps' Last week the High Court granted Dublin City Council temporary injunctions requiring the residents to immediately vacate the properties. The majority of the residents are foreign nationals. At the High Court, Justice Garrett Simons said that he had “no alternative” and would be negligent in his duty unless he continued the orders previously made by the court. The Judge said he accepted the residents, who are opposed to orders requiring them to leave what has been their homes for some years, were unhappy with his decision, and he sympathised with the position they find themselves.

Reggie grew up in West LA. Like much of the troubled youths in Los Angeles, he ran with the gangs and started to sell drugs. Reggie ended up in prison.

“Separately last night in Wolfe Tone Park a gang of six people torched and burnt two tents to the ground where homeless people had being sleeping at night for the past few weeks.

“Luckily enough in this incident nobody had being sleeping in the tent [at the time].”

Mr Walsh claimed the same gang of six men had also been carrying a fire extinguisher and the louts sprayed a homeless man who was sleeping in his tent and also verbally threatened him.

He added: “These incidents where a gang of male people are going around burning down tents while homeless people are asleep in them is very serious.

“It’s lucky for these homeless people nobody was seriously injured.

“This is the fourth or fifth serious incidents that has happened in Wolfe Tone Park.

Taking to Facebook he said: "Thank you to the stag party in house who must have had an episode of WrestleMania in their room last night. "We will be charging your card for the broken table, the broken lamp and the broken mug. "I will also be applying a charge to your card for my time spent driving to the stores to replace these items." He went on to say he applied the charges before putting up the post, just in case the card got cancelled.

“Homeless people who are sleeping rough in Wolfe Tone Park day or night are not safe.”

Last month a homeless man, in his 50s, who was living in a tent was viciously assaulted in a late-night knife attack in Wolfe Tone Park on August 18.

That violent attack came just one week after a man was left covered in blood after a separate vicious assault by two thugs in the same green-field area on Sunday, August 11.

Mr Walsh continued: “Recently Feed Our Homeless contacted the community guards in Pearse Street Garda station to highlight the number of serious incidents that have being carried out in Wolfe Tone Park.

“We also asked them to put a plan in place for extra garda patrols around Wolfe Tone Park to reduce the crime and the serious attacks that have being carried out on homeless people whiles sleeping rough.

“These very dangers attacks that were carried out [on Sunday] on homeless people and they are disgraceful, disgusting and totally unacceptable.

“I really hope whoever this gang is that is carrying out these attacks on homeless people that they are caught by the guards and are brought before the courts and dealt with as somebody could have been seriously injured or even died.

“The couple in the Phoenix Park whose tents was burnt to the ground while they were asleep in it are very lucky they were not burnt alive.”

Mr Walsh has called on Dublin City Council and also the DRHE to put more appropriate emergency beds into the system and make them available over the free phone number to homeless people seeking shelter away from the streets at night.

He concluded: “It’s very clear to see the streets are no place for any homeless person or couple to be sleeping rough at night.”
