Hundreds of people say they want to attend the funeral of an Irishman who died alone in London without any known family.

Joseph Tuohy (87), originally from Toomevara in Co Tipperary, passed away during the summer, with his remains being cremated.

Since an appeal was made for members of the public to attend his funeral Mass so his "last goodbye would not fall on deaf ears", several have come forward wanting to help with funeral arrangements.

Margaret de Brun, from Sandycove, Co Dublin, a volunteer at St Joseph's Pastoral Centre which raises money for the Friends of the Forgotten Irish Emigrants, got a letter expressing the hope this man could be brought home.

Brian Boylan, who runs St Gabriel's Homeless Centre in London, was made Mr Tuohy's next of kin when the elderly man passed away, and he decided to write the letter.

The funeral Mass has now been organised for 10am on September 27 in St Joseph's Church in Glasthule, Co Dublin. Mr Tuohy's ashes will be buried in Toomevara.

Significant numbers of people have made contact wanting to pay their respects.

"Now I'm worried there won't be enough room in the church," Ms de Brun said. "As a forgotten Irish emigrant, he shouldn't go to his final resting place without people around him. His passing shouldn't fall on deaf ears."

There was standing room only at funeral of Irishman who died alone in London .Joseph Tuohy died on July 11th  but only one person attended his funeral in England as he had no known family.The 83-year-old had spent much of his time living in homeless hostels after being brought up in an Irish orphanage as a child.He spent the first five years of his life with his mother Mary whom he adored but was taken away from when he was slightly burned in an accident.Standing room only .. and even that is getting tight st the funeral commemoration for #josephtuohy at St Joseph’s this morning.
