Two burglars wielding a knife and a meat cleaver confronted a French student in his own home, leaving him terrified.

But another person in the property managed to evade the burglars and alerted the gardaí to the crime.

Officers were at the scene in the Shannonvale area of Co Limerick within minutes of the alarm being raised.

Gardaí arrested a 16-year-old in relation to the aggravated burglary and are now hunting a second individual.

The crime happened on Sunday morning. Shortly after 7am, gardaí from Mayorstone Park received a report of a burglary in progress from a person in the property involved.

An extensive search was conducted of the area and a juvenile was later discovered hiding in the Shannonvale area.

He was arrested and brought to Henry Street garda station where he was last night detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.The individual was not armed when detained.
