This distressed black leather turtle was rescued off the Irish coast by a group of fishermen on Sunday after getting caught up in their ship's line.

The Irish seamen were fishing off the Wexford coast when they spotted the rare turtle who they believed was feeding on jellyfish in the Irish waters.

In the video filmed above by Birchall, the crew members are seen pulling on the buoy line in an effort to release the turtle.

The leatherback turtle can weigh up to 920kg and so the crew struggled with the weight and size of the creature.

Eventually they managed to unwrap the line around its body and let it loose.

The leatherback is unique among sea turtles in having a rubbery carapace instead of a hard shell and is the largest living sea turtle in the world.
