Twenty counties have been issued a Status Yellow rainfall warning as Met Eireann warned of "heavy downpours".

The alert covers Munster, Connacht, Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Wexford, Wicklow, Offaly and Westmeath.

It will come into effect at 6pm on Sunday and remain in place until 23.59pm on Monday.

A forecaster warned: "Heavy rainfall will occur during the period indicated with the potential for heavy downpours locally and during shorter intervals.

"There is potential for flooding on already saturated or waterlogged grounds."

Monday will get off to a miserable start with lashing rain and a risk of localised flooding.

Met Eireann said: "Persistent, sometimes thundery rain will move up into other areas on Monday with the potential for some high volumes and localised flooding.

"The heaviest of the rainfall is likely across the western half of the country through the first half of the day, with the eastern half of Ireland seeing the heaviest of it later in the evening. Highest temperatures 10C to 14C.

"Winds will be mostly moderate easterly, though they will be brisk up along south and east coasts."

Monday night is likely to stay very wet across the north and east - high volumes of rain and further spot flooding. Mist and fog will set in widely too, in near calm.

At 8am this morning Met Éireann issued an updated status orange wind warning for Connacht The website warns that "Tonight and Sunday morning storm Dylan will track northeastwards close to The status orange alert is valid from 9pm tonight until Sunday at 12pm. There is a status yellow

Met Éireann has issued a warning for heavy rainfall across 11 counties. There will be 25mm to 35mm of rainfall over a 24 hour period, beginning this evening. The status yellow warning affects Longford , Cavan, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Roscommon, Sligo, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Limerick.

It'll be chilly with lows of 4C to 7C.

Tuesday morning will start misty and foggy but it will slowly clear with some sunny spells developing.

A forecaster added: "Starting out largely dry, however wet and windy weather will move into the west and southwest by early afternoon, and this will gradually extend countrywide by evening.

"Highest temperatures 12 to 15 degrees in freshening southerly winds, strong and gusty along southern coasts, where the rain will be heaviest.

"A clearance to showers will follow overnight. Another chilly night, with lows of 4C to 8C."
