Gardaí in Cork have foiled what they believe was a planned looting attack on a sports shop in the city centre on Friday night when over 100 masked youths began gathering The organisers, it is believed, were inspired by similar lootings organised on social media in a number of British cities in recent days.

Up to 100 young people gathered in the Patrick Street area, some of whom were wearing balaclavas.

A post circulating on social media encouraged people to show up in the city this evening in order to rob a premises.

A spokesperson said local gardaí “were made aware of the potential for an incident to occur at a retail premises on Patrick’s Street”.

“Additional resources were deployed to the area to prevent any incident occurring. No offences have been disclosed in the area. Gardaí continue to patrol the area currently,” they added.

Labour Councillor John Maher called the alleged robbery plan “chilling and sobering”. He commended gardaí for dealing with the situation swiftly.

Maher said he will write to Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan and Garda Commissioner Drew Harris “to request that special branch officers are drafted into Cork city” to prevent similar behaviour happening in the future.
