  Senator apologises for 'Traveller' and 'dwarf' tweets but claims she is victim of smear campaign Senator Lorraine Clifford-Lee has apologised for tweets she posted in the past in which she used the words "knacker" and "Traveller" in a derogatory manner. Other Twitter messages said celebrity Kim Kardashian had a "fat arse", the Fianna Fáil politician also told how a "black Brazilian dwarf with ginger hair" sat beside her on a bus.

Michelle Mulherin (born 20 January 1972) is an Irish Fine Gael politician who has served as a Senator since May 2016, after being nominated by the Taoiseach. She previously served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Mayo constituency from 2011 to 2016.

Rónán Thomas Mullen (born 13 October 1970) is an Irish senator and former delegate to the Council of Europe. He is the leader of the Human Dignity Alliance, a pro-life political party formed in 2018.

Michelle Mulherin has jumped to the defence of her Fine Gael colleague Maria Bailey over coverage of her swing incident.

Mrs Bailey has been taken off the Fine Gael election ticket for Dun Laoghaire after months of backlash over a personal injury case she took out against The Dean Hotel.

The TD withdrew her legal action after it became public, but high ranking members of the party were unhappy about the unwanted attention placed on the party.

After a meeting on Thursday, Mrs Bailey was confirmed to have been removed by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar from the party’s election plans.

In a statement she apologised for the ‘difficulties’ she may have caused, but said that she was also ‘disappointed’ with the decision.

Senator Mulherin has since jumped to her defence, insisting that the coverage of Mrs Bailey in the media wasn’t ‘fair’ and caused her downfall within Fine Gael.

Speaking on The Tonight Show on Virgin Media, Mrs Mulherin told Matt Cooper: ‘Well I’m very disappointed for Maria as a colleague in the party.

‘I know she worked really hard in her constituency and in all the portfolios she had, including housing. Tonight has to be very difficult for her.’

‘I’m speaking from my own personal view here and I know a lot of people will share it.

‘I suppose Maria has to consider her position. She’s a strong performer, I wouldn’t be writing Maria off.’
