It has emerged that the late broadcasting legend Gay Byrne donated over €80,000 to Crumlin Children’s Hospital before his death.

The 85-year-old inaugural Late Late Show host died on November 4 following a lengthy battle with cancer, marking the end of an era for many in Ireland for whom Byrne was a foundational cultural influence.

The RTE icon’s daughter Crona has now revealed the extent of Byrne’s philanthropy, confirming that her father raffled off the Harley Davidson motorbike he received from U2 on his final episode of the Late Late Show in 1999, raising €82,000 for Crumlin Children’s Hospital.

Speaking to the Clare Champion, Crona Byrne revealed that her father chose to stay off the roads, opting instead to put the Harley Davidson’s value towards a worthy cause.

Crona also expressed her gratitude towards the Irish public for the messages of condolence and the fond memories of Gay Byrne that have been shared with the late broadcaster’s family since his death.
