The pair had previously been picture posing with one another at an event in Dublin castle.

The tweet in question was just one of a number of controversial posts made by Clifford-Lee on the site between the years of 2011 and 2012.

Clifford-Lee had used the derogatory terms ‘pikey’ and ‘knacker’ in some of the posts, while she commented on what she called Kim Kardashian’s ‘fat arse’ and described the Wright Venue nightclub in Swords as a ‘slut’s venue.’

Many have rushed to condemn Clifford-Lee, who was on Fianna Fáil’s ruling national executive at the time she posted the tweets.

Among them was An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, who declared the tweets to be ‘misogynistic towards women, racist towards Travellers, classist and also body shaming.’

He called on the senator to apologise and to make a personal statement in the Seanad.

Despite calls for her resignation, Clifford-Lee has received the backing of Fianna Fáil leader, Mícheál Martin, and will still contest the upcoming Fingal by-election.

The beleaguered senator yesterday met with Pavee Point director Martin Collins as she attempted to make amends and put the controversy behind her.

Collins reportedly accepted her apology and praised her ‘positive’ approach in reaching out.
