Two of the 16 migrants found in a sealed lorry onboard a ferry bound for Rosslare are children.

The two boys have now been taken into the care of the child and family agency TUSLA, while the other 14 men, all believed to be of Kurdish ethnicity, are in an immigration reception in Dublin.

It is believed the males have been travelling up to 20 days to get to Cherbourg, France before they entered the container and arrived in Rosslare yesterday.

It’s understood the 14 men are all aged between 20 and 40.

The alarm was raised by a staff member carrying out a routine inspection on the car deck when she heard banging noises from inside the container.

Gardai confirmed two of the males were children and formal identification of the asylum seekers is ongoing.

A garda spokesman said: “An Garda Síochána continue to investigate all the circumstances of the discovery of 16 males in a Climate Controlled Trailer Unit on board the STENA Horizon Ferry sailing from Cherbourg, France to Rosslare Europort, Wexford yesterday.

“All the males are believed to be of Kurdish ethnicity from the Middle East Region, however their formal identification is ongoing.

“Fourteen males are adult and have sought ‘international protection’.

Both the driver and owner of the truck are co-operating with the garda investigation.
